Indonesia’s 28-year-old right-arm pacer Gede Priandana etched his name in the record books by becoming the first bowler in an international T20I to claim five wickets in a single over. The feat came during the first T20I against Cambodia in Bali on Tuesday, marking a historic moment for both Indonesia and world cricket.
Chasing 168, Cambodia seemed in contention at 106 for 5 after 15 overs. Priandana, however, turned the game on its head in his first over. He struck with his first three deliveries, completing a hat-trick by dismissing Shah Abrar Hussain, Nirmaljit Singh, and Chanthoeun Rathanak. Following a dot ball, Priandana removed Mongdara Sok and Pel Vennak, finishing the over with only a wide conceded between the final two wickets. Cambodia fell 60 runs short, handing Indonesia a comfortable win.
Earlier in the match, Priandana contributed six runs off 11 balls while opening alongside wicketkeeper-batter Dharma Kesuma, who starred with an unbeaten 110 from 68 balls, including eight fours and six sixes.
While Priandana is the first to achieve this milestone in an official international T20I, similar feats have occurred in domestic men’s T20 cricket. Al-Amin Hossain took five wickets in an over for UCB-BCB XI against Abahani Limited in the 2013-14 Victory Day T20 Cup, and Karnataka’s Abhimanyu Mithun claimed five in an over during the 2019-20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy semi-final against Haryana.
Historically, 14 bowlers have taken four wickets in a T20 over, with Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga famously taking four in four balls against New Zealand in a T20I in 2019. Priandana’s record, however, sets a new international benchmark, highlighting the growing prominence of Indonesia in world cricket.
