Derbyshire have pulled off a significant coup ahead of the 2026 season, securing Pakistan Test seamer Mohammad Abbas on a two-year contract covering the 2026 and 2027 County Championship campaigns.
Abbas arrives with an outstanding red-ball pedigree in county cricket, having impressed previously with Leicestershire, Hampshire and Nottinghamshire. Most recently, he played a key role in Nottinghamshire’s Championship title triumph last summer, underlining his reputation as one of the most reliable new-ball bowlers in the game.
The move also reunites Abbas with Derbyshire head coach Mickey Arthur — the man who handed him his Test debut for Pakistan — as the club looks to turn last season’s near-miss into a serious promotion push.
“This is a statement signing for us,” Arthur said. “We’ve beaten a number of Division One counties to secure one of the finest red-ball bowlers around, and we’re absolutely delighted to have Mohammad on board for 2026 and 2027.
“He’s an exceptional bowler who builds pressure, bowls maidens and takes wickets at an outstanding average. Just as important, his experience will be invaluable for our young players.”
Since first arriving in county cricket in 2018, Abbas has taken 291 Championship wickets at an impressive average of 19.89, establishing himself as one of the most consistent overseas performers in the competition. His most recent Test appearance for Pakistan came in January.
Abbas said the opportunity to work with Arthur again was a major factor in his decision.
“It’s exciting to join Derbyshire and reunite with Mickey Arthur,” Abbas said. “He’s a fantastic coach, and after hearing his plans for the club, it’s clear we share the same ambition — to be playing in Division One.
“The team only just missed out on promotion in 2025, so I’m hoping I can contribute to a few more wins and help give the supporters something to celebrate.”
With Abbas’ proven ability and experience now added to their attack, Derbyshire have sent a clear message about their intentions for the seasons ahead.
